First contacts

1754–1842

Canadian voyageurs and Catholic missionaries were the first people of European origin to contact First Nations in Alberta. The travellers were workers under contract with the colony or the commercial companies of the Canadian colony to transport goods and explorers beyond the St. Lawrence Valley. The missionaries were just as adventurous in carrying the gospel to residents of all faiths in the West. The impact of these two groups is still being felt. The positions and missions of the past have become, for the most part, today’s communities.
